What a little sweat will get you…

I was recently hiking on Santa Catalina Island off of the coast of Southern California with my 18 year old son. It was a great hike that took us from the isthmus on the North end of the island to almost the northern most tip of the island. We took an early morning ferry boat out of San Pedro- my old stomping grounds- to Two Harbors. I deliberately stayed away from Avalon as it’s pretty touristy and this being the July 4th weekend I had no desire to be stuck there with hoards of holiday tourists.
It was a beautiful day, in the mid to upper 80’s and we choose to stay near the coastline on a dirt road, rather than take the inland route on a foot path. In hind site, I wish we would have take the trail it would have been a more direct route. Instead the coast road winds it’s way following the coast- with every bay and inlet the coast had to offer.

Santa Catalina Island has a very arid climate and although it’s right off of LA, it’s not very inhabited due to the fact that most of the island is protected by the Catalina Conservency which makes it a perfect get away from the grind of LA. The road reminded me of some far off Mediterranean island, but what it really is , is a desert. Along with the Prickly Pear Cacti and lizards, you’ve got the great California sunshine bearing down on you.

Throughout the this trek of ten miles, I kept thinking to myself what a great get away we found. I had been to Catalina in the past, but not to Two Harbors for a hike, and I really liked it. It was a hot and sweaty day, with sore feet at the end, but as in life, work and play, a little sweat makes it all worth it.

That’s it for now,
